Building a Handicapped Bathroom
Before you tackle the task of building a handicapped bathroom, you must first study the regulations as set forth by the ADA or Americans with Disabilities Act. You need to be mindful of the exact measurements required, especially when it comes to a handicap toilet and grab bars. Also, you need to make sure there is going to be enough room in front of the toilet, the rule being at least 32 inches. In addition to a handicap toilet, you may also have to upgrade the bathroom with a new shower, tub and sink for it to be completely functional.
In order to make a bathroom safer and more accessible, you should be aware that there are many things that are useful for a disabled person. For example, a handicapped bath may be equipped with a bath seat and tub door so the individual does not have to step over the tub rim to get out. Shower stalls usually have a chair or bench and safety bars as well. These innovations can help those with a disability take care of their own personal hygiene, or at least allow them to help their caregiver. You may want to equip motion sensor sinks that turn on and off automatically if grasping is difficult. There are also motion sensors for flushing toilets and drying hands.
Something that you need to look at for sure is that the surfaces are non-slip. This can be difficult in a bathroom, but for the disabled it is a must. Those with disabilities and also some elderly individuals are more susceptible to falls in the bathroom because it can get slippery. Choose a flooring material that is water resistant yet not slick, and always use a bathmat. There should be a towel or rug to stand on when exiting the shower or tub to avoid the risk of slipping on wet feet, which is a good idea for every bathroom.
You can always hire somebody to build the handicapped bathroom, but you need to make sure that they have the proper experience and credentials for building bathrooms for the disabled. There are some companies that do only this, which are probably your best bet because of their vast experience. By using a company who specializes in building the handicapped bath, you are helping to make sure the bathroom is crafted to be safe and ADA compliant. If you want to learn more about what makes something ADA compliant there is a great deal of information on the Web.
